HOLDING ON
This painting was born in a room where nothing could be fixed during a period of sustained presence where time felt suspended and light felt limited. A time when I learned to stay. I painted not to explain the experience but to sit inside it and stay. An act of witnessing, quiet, relentless and tender. The sky here holds what words could not; the burning ache of anticipatory grief, the softness of shared silence, the way the light feels heavier when you know it won’t last. This work is a record of presence – of sitting with someone you love as time loosens its grip and meaning intensifies.
This work reflects the experience of being present with a loved one nearing the end of life. The horizon suggests a threshold, while the light carried both love and inevitability. It is a painting about staying – about attention, care and the quiet courage of witness.
Rather than describing a specific moment, this piece focuses on the act of witnessing without intervention, and allowing tenderness and intensity to coexist. The painting is an exploration of how love sharpens perception and how light can say what words cannot.
I painted not to explain the experience but to sit inside it and stay.
