EULOGY FOR THE LIGHT

When I set this canvas down, I wasn’t looking to capture a sunset or a storm. I wanted to paint the silence that follows grief.

The Weight of the Dark

I layered the bottom of the piece in thick, jagged obsidian. I wanted that texture to feel heavy—like the sediment of grief. It’s the ground we stand on when the warmth has finally been extinguished. Those vertical, shadowed forms on the left? To me, they are the silent mourners, the monoliths of what we used to be, watching the horizon go cold.

The Dissolving Blue

I chose this specific cerulean because it feels like a memory that is starting to fray at the edges.

• The Blur: I intentionally softened the boundaries of the light. It isn't a sun; it’s an echo. It’s the ghost of a flame.

• The Gold: I scattered those flecks of gold like embers. They represent the "small glories"—the laughter, the touches, the specific moments that refuse to be swallowed by the black, even as the sky around them turns to ash.

"I didn't want to paint the dark; I wanted to paint the absence of the light. I wanted you to feel the temperature of the room dropping as the blue retreats into the void."

The Finality

There is a deliberate movement in my brushwork, a sweeping motion toward the left. It’s the draft of a closing door. By the time your eyes reach the right-hand corner, the violet and deep indigo are already taking over. This isn't a "goodnight"; it is a final address for something that was once blindingly beautiful and is now only a stain on the memory.
